Overview

In this course we discuss various morphological phenomena and the traditional approaches to morphological analysis, particularly those concerning the interfaces between morphology and syntax and phonology. Examples come from a wide variety of languages. This course is meant as an introduction to essential concepts in morphology, and also provides students with the tools to correctly identify and describe morphology in the field.

Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Have the necessary tools and skills to do morphological analysis
  • Understand morphological terminology and major morphological phenomena
  • Be able to demonstrate how morphology interacts with phonology and syntax
  • Define the core principles of morphology
  • Provide examples which illustrate different morphological phenomena
  • Conduct a morphological analysis of linguistic data from unfamiliar languages
